Mixing&Mastering

Mixing

Time spent mixing can mean the difference between a good recording and a great one, With the individual component tracks you've already recorded.
It is important that you have the files ready to post to my repository. The standard file type is usually a 24bit/44.1kHz or 48kHz wav file. However it can be 16bit/44.1kHz if this is what you've recorded the project at.
If you are exporting from Pro Tools, Cubase, FL Studio or any other standard DAW, for easy syncing at my end, the files themselves should all start at the same time, you have to create steams.
The tracks themselves should be dry, as in they should not have any effects applied to them other than what was recorded in the first instance. If you have already applied effects as part of the production intention then all means let me know. This can include creative elements such as filter sweeps, delays etc.

Important information

Although it's good practice to get a strong signal when recording, don't let any audio clip peak at all. Getting your vocals / instruments to peak at a maximum of around - 3dB gives me headroom to work with your vocals / instruments. If your vocal / instruments are clipping during recording, nothing can be done to fix the distorted sound and it can ruin your project.

Please be aware that I can only do so much to get your recording to sound great. To make things better for us both its recommended that you have a clean recording signal. A Condenser Microphone is recommended. Make sure your vocals aren't clipping (in the red) on your audio interface. You can reduce background noise by recording in a quiet location, and reduce ambience, echoes and reflections by using a reflection filter or recording booth (a closet with clothes makes a great recording booth). To reduce pop's and unwanted s sounds, its highly recommended that you use a pop filter when recording. The better your recordings are the better I can make your finished product sound!

Mastering

Mastering is the process of taking the mixed track to the final stage of realization. This usually involves Equalization, Compression and Limiting to make sure the track is well rounded and loud enough to complete with other professional mixes whilst not sounding too squashed or affected by the process. Some issues of unwanted spikes, noise and stereo problems can also addressed at this stage.

Your mix should be sent without or with very little mix compression and especially no limiting in order to give me the opportunity to correctly maximize your track.

It is preferable to deal with whole album masters in order to get sonic smoothness between different songs. For instance, you may have some songs that were recorded at different times and with different equipment. In this instance it may be necessary to attempt to homogenize the tracks to lessen the difference in sound that would otherwise be noticeable and undesirable.

Important information

Although its good practice to get a strong signal, don't let any tracks in your project clip peak at all and leave your master track empty. (No limiters, compressors or any other effects). If your Master track is hitting 0.0dB, you pushing the levels too much. Getting your songs to peak at a maximum of around -3dB gives me headroom to work with your project. This is very important. If your master track is limited, normalized, hits 0.0dB or clips, I can not master the song.

If the master track is peaking / clipping above -3db go back and lower the volume of each track in your project until the master track peaks at around -3dB. This is very important.

The mastered copy of your song will include a copy in full stereo wav format with a sample rate of 44.100 KHz and 16 bit sample size for professional cd and iTunes distribution and a full stereo mp3 format with a 192 kpbs bit rate for online mp3 distribution and downloads, including all meta-data and cover art that you include to be embedded.
